What are Screen Tests?

Hello Everyone,

It’s Josh here from Loveridge Digital. This week on “Getting into it with Loveridge Digital”, we are going to cover screen tests—an essential step in high-budget video production.

What are Screen Tests?

You’ve just come up with an exciting new concept for an advertisement. It’s a big project with a high budget and multiple moving parts. Some scenes may need to be captured in a single take, making preparation critical. In these cases, a screen test is the best way to ensure everything runs smoothly.

The test is a filmed audition where an actor performs a scene on camera. This test helps assess both performance and visual suitability. Often, actors wear costumes and makeup to match their roles, allowing directors to see how they will appear on screen.

Why Are Screen Tests Important?

They offer valuable insights into how an actor will perform on the actual shoot day. They help filmmakers determine whether the actor fits the role and if they can deliver the required expressions, dialogue, and movement effectively.

Additionally, these tests allow production teams to prepare for complex shots. If a scene has only one opportunity for capture, a screen test ensures everything is planned in advance. This preparation helps avoid costly mistakes that could impact both the budget and timeline.

How Screen Tests Can Save Your Project

Skipping a screen test may seem like a way to save time and money. However, not testing in advance can lead to reshoots, delays, and additional expenses. A failed take could mean lost footage, which could jeopardise the entire production.

While screen tests add a small extra cost, they are a lifesaver for large-scale projects. They provide clarity, reduce uncertainty, and increase the chances of a successful shoot.

Next time you plan a big marketing video, consider adding these to your process. It could be the difference between a failed project and a highly successful one.

Thank you for watching! I hope you found this informative and engaging. Until next time!
