What is an Animatic?

Hello Everyone,

Hey, it’s Josh here from Loveridge Digital. This week on “Getting into it with Loveridge Digital,” we’re diving into a powerful tool used in visual storytelling — the animatic.

Setting the Stage

Picture this: you’ve just wrapped up your storyboard for an upcoming project. Things are looking good on paper, but suddenly a question hits,
“What will this actually look like in motion?” You like the concept, but you’re unsure if you’ll love the final version once everything’s put together.

That’s exactly where an animatic comes in.

What Is an Animatic?

An animatic is a sequence of storyboard images combined with audio. It gives you a rough yet visualised preview of how your project will flow once it’s in motion. Think of it as your next-generation storyboard — a dynamic blueprint.

Animatics are often used on larger-scale projects like feature films or animation. That’s because they take a bit more time to develop but deliver huge value in return.

Why Animatics Matter

Here’s the thing — when you’re working on a higher-budget production, your operational costs can climb fast. The last thing you want is to reach the finish line and feel underwhelmed by the flow or structure.

That’s why creating an animatic right after the storyboarding phase is a smart move. It gives you peace of mind and helps you lock in the timing, emotion, and sequence of your piece before investing heavily in production.

Even more importantly, animatics help catch flow and narrative issues early in the process. That can save you from serious setbacks and unnecessary do-overs later on.

Final Thoughts

While animatics might feel like overkill on smaller jobs, they’re a vital tool in a production company’s toolbox. They help us make sure we’re delivering a final product that you don’t just like — you love.

Thanks for tuning in and taking the time to watch. Hope you found this helpful and engaging — until next time!
