What is the Golden Ratio?

Hello Everyone,

Its Josh here from Loveridge Designs, this week on “Getting into it with Loveridge Designs” We are going to cover the Golden Ratio.

The Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio that’s commonly found in nature. It historically has been used to create visually-pleasing, organic-looking compositions in Content creation and other creative mediums. Whether you’re a interior designer, photographer or production specialist the Golden Ratio, also known as the Golden Mean, The Golden Section, or the Greek letter phi, can be used to bring a balance to the projects you are creating.
So what is the Golden Ratio?
Closely related to the Fibonacci Sequence (which you may remember from our previous videos), the Golden Ratio describes the perfectly symmetrical relationship between two proportions.
Essentially its a rectangle where, if you cut off a square (side length equal to the shortest side of the rectangle), the rectangle that’s left will have the same proportions as the original rectangle. When summed up mathematically it’s displayed as a 1:1.61 ratio, the Golden Ratio can also be displayed using a Golden Rectangle.

It’s thought that the Golden Ratio has been in use for at least 4,000 years in human art and design.
In recent times, the Golden Ratio can be observed in music, art, and design all around you. By applying a workflow that is similar to the golden ratio you can actually bring the same design concepts to your own work.

In the design industry, anything that seeks to produce visually appealing effect is encouraged. Most works of art are focused on such proportions, and in architecturepainting, sculpture, photography, and more, these same proportions are used. The use of the golden ratio in design is well-justified, as it offers structure and natural beauty.

Even subtle and very small nuances that bring the design closer to the golden ratio grid can have a huge effect on your project.
The golden ratio grid should be used as a design cornerstone that ensures that everything is placed correctly to generate the desired emotional response. In many cases, people use the golden ratio without even knowing it, which is proof that following the grid is intuitive. Ultimately, the ratio helps to create equilibrium and keep elements balanced. The golden ratio can also contribute to creating feeling of natural comfort and equilibrium that keeps the consumer enchanted and engaged!

The golden ratio should be used for the following areas within the content creation process
Picking the space that is needed between each element of your design and also ensuring negative space is just right
Arranging your scene in a simple to understand way
Achieving an equilibrium within your frame!
Font choices and finally making sure all elements are sized correctly

Text sizing and positioning within your frame

Next time you are doing a project you should try use the golden shapes and see how they change your design and transform the overall look and feel of  the piece you are making. It’s also important to remember to stay patient, as truly mastering the golden ratio takes time. Even so, start to implement the ratio slowly into the content you are creating and hey who knows you might even find a difference in your projects.

Thank you very much for taking the time to watch the video I hope you found it both informative and engaging
Until next time.
