What is Chiaroscuro?

Hello Everyone,

It’s Josh here from Loveridge Digital, this week on “Getting into it with Loveridge Digital” we are going to cover what Chiaroscuro is and how it is used in your projects!

When watching your favourite movie you may have wondered to yourself how do filmmakers add such visual depth to an otherwise boring scene, for example a person sitting in a room at night time.
How come in a film it looks such interesting and enraptures you at nothing but a glance, Well this is where Chiaroscuro comes in.

Chiaroscuro is the term that is used to describe the art of using the contrast between light and dark within a piece to bring it to life and add visual depth and intrigue, This technique dates all the way back to the often what is often described as the golden age of innovation the Renaissance and fuses the Italian words: “chiaro” meaning “clear” or “bright,” and “oscuro” meaning “obscure” or “dark.”

Now you may say to yourself” that’s interesting but why does it matter for my video?”

Chiaroscuro is vital within any piece that is trying to invoke a mood, tone, or emotion, are you creating a travel video for a resort? well in this case a scene where the gleaming sunrise appears over the dark dusky horizon at dawn would be a potential scene where Chiaroscuro could be used, This scene would invoke the mood of a new adventure or journey, A fresh start that many people seek when looking at travel resorts. It is always vital to remember that your customers are driven by their emotions and if you can tap into those emotions you will have a much easier time showing them the value of your product or service, many studies have shown that if a video reaches someone on an emotional level then they are much more likely to proceed with a purchase and always remember that in a digital age full of constant marketing bombardment you need to set your company apart from the rest.

Areas of high contrast within a piece are striking and subconsciously resonants with us, They can take what is an otherwise boring scene and turn it into something memorable.

Thank you very much for taking the time to watch the video, I hope you found it informative and engaging, until next time.

As you can probably imagine drones give video production specialist a vast variety of shot types that they now can create but it is important to note that not everyone can use a drone, To legally fly a drone you need to do rigorous training and obtain certification in the country of the drone operation, this certification is vital to ensure no ones privacy is infringed upon and the drone is operated safely.

Thank you very much for taking the time to watch the video, I hope you found it informative and engaging, until next time.
