What is Forced Perspective?

Hello Everyone,

It’s Josh here from Loveridge Digital, this week on “Getting into it with Loveridge Digital” we are going to cover Forced Perspective.

Forced perspective is a basic enough image manipulation trick used by creatives of all types ranging from budding photographers to cinematographers essentially forced perspective is the act of making an item appear larger than it actually is in real life.

Heres how it happens, essentially it’s the result of the manipulation of our perception by using an optical illusion to trick our minds into seeing something that isn’t there, this is employed when you are looking at the difference between objects size or scale and your mind then perceives the distance between them automatically. Creatives use this trick by cleverly placing camera angles in such a way that amplifies the illusion to create the perspective.

Now you may ask yourself, “ok that’s cool but how does it help me and my videos?” Well, forced perspective is a great tool in any brands toolbox as it can allow you to create scenes or items that would be quite expensive to create without using forced perspective, So let’s say you want an actor in your brand video to be a giant or a smaller person well you really have three options in this situation,
#1 – Hire a double that is the correct proportion
#2 – Create a character in CG and use visual effects
#3 – Use forced perspective to create the illusion.

Forced perspective can also be used to alter the perceived size of real-world objects, a classic example you may know is the leaning tower of Pisa, I’m sure you have seen pictures where people are pretending to hold it up by using forced perspective to create the illusion.

Another great example of when this technique was used is in the original lord of the rings films, they utilized forced perspective to make the “hobbits” in the film, as I’m sure you are aware the actors that played the roles of the hobbits were not that small.

Forced perspective is one of those techniques you may not utilize in every single video you create for your brand but I can assure you that it’s vital to be aware of and you never know when it may come in handy!

Thank you very much for taking the time to watch the video, I hope you found it informative and engaging, until next time.
